Debunking 2024 Skincare Trends

As social media evolves, new trends emerge, often driven by viral TikTok videos or beauty influencers. With so much noise circulating online, how do you know what skincare tips work and what’s just a made up to make money? Our Provider Development Manager, Sara Bullock, NP-C, is here to spill the tea and set the record straight about some of the most talked-about skincare trends in 2024.

DIY Facial Peels

Myth:  While performing a DIY facial peel with common household ingredients like honey, yogurt, aspirin, or lemon juice may seem convenient, it's not the best approach for achieving effective skincare results. If you’re looking for a convenient at-home treatment, you should consider a medical-grade peel such as Skinbetter AlphaRet Exfoliating Facial Peel Pads or ZO Skin Health Enzymatic Peel. However, for true lasting results, a professional chemical peel with a medical provider is optimal to achieving long-lasting results due to their higher concentration of active ingredients.

Face Taping for Wrinkles

Myth:  Face taping might provide temporary results for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, but it doesn’t address the root cause. Many people turn to this trend for quick fixes before a special event, but it’s not a sustainable solution for preventing and reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Face taping should not be considered a replacement for effective treatments, such as neurotoxins including Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport, which are used to relax muscles to reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles and prevent the formation of new ones.

Preventative Botox

True: Preventative Botox, or "tox" as we call it at Skin Clique, often sparks some debate, but here's my perspective. While many believe Botox should only be used once wrinkles are visible, starting treatments early can help delay the onset of fine lines and wrinkles. That said, we believe the best time to begin Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport injections is when you start noticing lines that bother you on a daily basis.

Facial Ice Rollers

True: Ice rollers have become a popular tool for reducing puffiness, especially in the morning. The cooling effect helps to temporarily tighten the skin and diminish the appearance of puffiness that often develops overnight. The ice roller works by promoting lymphatic drainage and constricting blood vessels, providing immediate relief, but not a long-lasting solution. While this method is effective for a quick refresh, the results are temporary.

Skin Cycling

Myth:  Skin cycling is a recent TikTok trend that suggests the idea of rotating skincare products each night and only using active ingredients on alternate days. However, based on our expertise, this approach is a myth. It’s like only using 50% of the product’s potential. Active ingredients work best when used consistently, allowing them to deliver optimal results. To maximize the impact of your skincare routine, these ingredients should be applied regularly, as your skin can tolerate.

GLP-1 for Weight Loss

True: GLP-1 is a revolutionary medication, often referred to as a "miracle drug" for its remarkable weight loss benefits. These injections help regulate blood sugar levels and signal the brain that the stomach is full. GLP-1 also slows down the process of digestion, helping to maintain more stable blood sugar levels and prolong feelings of fullness. Its ability to address multiple factors, including appetite control and inflammation reduction, makes it a powerful medication to address weight loss goals.

Skinimalism

True: Skinimalism is all about simplifying your skincare routine and using only the most necessary products, eliminating unnecessary steps, and focusing on what truly works for your skin. Whether you're managing reactive skin or starting a new skincare journey, this approach can help streamline your daily routine. The key to success is consistency, and the best routine is one that you can easily maintain every day, leading to better long-term results.
