Lip Filler Aftercare Tips
Listen to Your Provider
It’s important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your board-certified filler provider – trust the experts! Since your provider knows you best, these instructions include specific details that may vary slightly depending on the type of lip filler used along with your unique skin and needs. If you have any questions make sure to ask. If you’re a Skin Clique patient you can always text your provider with any outlying concerns.
Avoid Touching Your Lips
After receiving lip fillers, your lips may be sensitive and prone to swelling. To minimize discomfort and reduce the risk of complications, avoid touching the treated area unless instructed to do so by your provider. Yes, that means holding off on the kisses too! Kissing and puckering can inadvertently cause displacement of the filler that was just placed!
Don't Wear Makeup for 24 Hours
We recommend to avoid applying makeup to your lips for at least 24 hours. In order to put makeup on, you have to touch your face or use an applicator. This can increase the risk of exposing bacteria or irritating the delicate skin around the lips. It's best not to introduce anything foreign to the area until healed!
Apply Ice or Cold Compresses
Don’t freak out – the swelling is normal and will go down! The morning you wake up after lip filler is when you can expect to be most swollen. To help reduce swelling and alleviate any discomfort, you can apply ice packs or cold compresses to your lips for no more than 3-5 minutes three times daily during the first 24 hours after your lip filler treatment. Be sure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to prevent direct contact with your skin, avoiding excessive cold exposure. I also recommend sleeping on 2 pillows the night you receive filler if you can tolerate it! This will help swelling in the morning (many patients actually find they love the swelling and are sad when it starts to improve!).
Stay Hydrated for Healthy Lips
Hydrating is an underrated essential for maintaining healthy skin. It can optimize the results of your lip filler treatment. Be sure to drink plenty of water in the days following your treatment to keep your lips and skin hydrated. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption because it can dehydrate the body and prolong swelling.
Avoid Exercise & Strenuous Activities
While it's important to stay active and healthy, it's best to avoid vigorous exercise for 72 hours or whenever the swelling goes down after receiving lip fillers. These activities can increase blood flow to the lips and worsen swelling, potentially compromising your results.
Use Sun Protection Regularly
Protecting your lips from the sun's harmful UV rays is vital for health and appearance, especially after receiving lip filler injections. Apply an SPF lip balm regularly and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat for added coverage when outdoors.
About Lip Filler Injections
Lip fillers, also known as lip injections or lip augmentation, are minimally invasive cosmetic treatments designed to enhance the volume, shape, and definition of your lips. During a filler treatment, a board-certified medical provider carefully injects hyaluronic acid dermal filler into targeted areas of the lips, resulting in plumping and contouring effects. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance within your body. It is great for plumping and hydration. One of the reasons lip fillers cause swelling the day after the procedure is they LOVE water and attract this, leading to increased swelling!
Lip fillers can be personalized to individual preferences, allowing for subtle enhancements or more drastic transformations. This popular cosmetic treatment requires little downtime and results typically last between 9 to 12 months.
