Unlocking the Power of Retinol
Retinol has become a powerhouse in the skincare industry, and for good reason. This powerful product offers transformative benefits for your skin. Our experts are sharing some important things you should know about retinol, including its benefits, how to use it effectively, and the differences between retinol and retinoids.
What is Retinol?
Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is an ingredient used in skincare products. This powerful ingredient increases skin cell turnover to help healthier skin rise to the surface for an improved appearance.
Benefits of Retinol for Your Skin
Retinol offers multiple benefits for your skin, making it a staple for your daily skincare routine. Positive results from retinol include:
- Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Retinol stimulates collagen production, helping smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.
- Improves Skin Texture: Using retinol regularly promotes cell turnover, creating a more refined and even skin texture.
- Minimizes Pores: Retinol helps unclog pores, reducing the appearance of acne for a clearer complexion.
- Treats Sun Damage: Retinol can repair and rejuvenate skin affected by sun damage and photoaging.
How to Use Retinol
To maximize the impact of retinol while minimizing potential side effects, follow these expert tips from Sara Bullock, NP-C and Provider Development Manager at Skin Clique:
- Start Slowly: Begin by applying retinol every other night to allow your skin to acclimate. Gradually increase usage to nightly as tolerated by your skin.
- Apply at Night: Since retinol increases sun sensitivity, it must be used as the last step at night. You can also apply moisturizer on top of it to help decrease any dryness.
- Use the Right Amount: A pea-sized amount is sufficient for your entire face. Apply a thin layer evenly for optimal absorption.
Retinol vs Retinoid: What’s the Difference?
The naming of retinols has to do with how many conversions away it is from the true vitamin A molecule. The more conversion a retinol undergoes, the less irritating people may find it. For example, isotretinoin (pure vitamin A) is extremely irritating to the skin, while retinol is less irritating because it is 3 conversions away from pure vitamin A. Retinoids are 1 conversion away from pure vitamin A and can often provide quicker results but can lead to increased irritation.
